When Do You Celebrate Easter?

If you are like me, you celebrated Easter this past Sunday (April 8). But did you know Eastern Orthodox Christians (the 2nd largest Christian denomination in the world) celebrate Easter next Sunday, April 15? I was surprised to learn this, and though their faith is similar to Western Christians, they have a different calendar. They use the Julian, while we use the Gregorian calendar.

When is the right day to celebrate Easter?  Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ the third day after his Crucifixion. It is the day we celebrate our risen Lord. Jesus died on the cross to pay the price for our sins. But that is just the beginning of the story. As he promised, on the third day he rose from the dead, and his resurrection is still celebrated today by Christians over 2,000 years later on what we refer to as Easter.

Jesus literally separated time, from BC to AD. He is the one and only son of God, the living God, who reigns forever. Because of Jesus' resurrection, believers have eternal life! We can live with God forever!

So which day is the right day to celebrate our Risen Lord?  Every day. Let us remember his love, his sacrifice and his resurrection every day. Amen.

It honestly warms my heart to know that I played a part in the conversation that prompted this. I also apologize if I came across as polemical, but sometimes it's hard not to when limited to 140-character blips.

The issues and reasons why are buried in a few layers of history and awkward church politics, but you're right, of course. The Resurrection was so powerful and universe-shattering, that its ripples affect time not only since it, but before it as well. It changes everything.

It's a good reminder.

Love to receive confirmation of what was stirring in my own heart and that I actually wrote about in my Sunday Reflections posts this past Monday. Love the way the Holy Spirit works!
